I saw the original Caravaggio “Crown of Thorns” painting at the Kunsthistorisches last week and thought I’d try to copy a section of it.
I only photographed two stages of this painting – the underpainting and the completed piece. For the underpainting I used burnt umber and titanium white mixed with lots of flour – that’s why he looks a bit pasty! It was an experiment. Not the best copy in the world is it?!
